How To Check And Adjust The Axial Clearance Of Camshaft?

Jul 18, 2023

Checking and Adjusting Camshaft Axial Gap

The camshaft is a vital component in the functioning of a engine. It controls the opening and closing of the engine valves, which is responsible for the combustion process. To ensure proper operation of the camshaft, it is important to check and adjust the axial clearance of the camshaft.

Axial clearance is the play between the camshaft and the bearing surface in the engine block. This clearance should be within the manufacturer's specified range, as excessive axial clearance can lead to engine damage. Here are the steps to check and adjust the axial gap of the camshaft.

Step 1: Preparation

Before you begin, make sure the engine is cool and drain the oil from the engine. Remove the valve covers and any other components that may interfere with accessing the camshaft.

Step 2: Identifying the Camshaft

Locate the camshaft in the engine. The camshaft is usually found in the cylinder head, beneath the valve cover.

Step 3: Measuring the Axial Clearance

Using a dial indicator, measure the radial play of the camshaft. The dial indicator must be mounted on the engine block in such a way that it touches the end of the camshaft. If the reading of the dial indicator is greater than the manufacturer's specifications, adjustment is necessary.

Step 4: Adjustment

To adjust the axial gap, first, locate the thrust plate that supports the camshaft. Loosen the bolts that hold the plate to the engine block and remove the plate. Adjusting shims may be present on the plate or shaft, measure the thickness of the shims.

If the axial gap is too large, replace the thin shim with a thicker shim to reduce the gap. Conversely, if the gap is too small, replace the thick shim with a thinner shim. Reinstall the thrust plate and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

Conclusion

The camshaft is a critical component in an engine, and proper adjustment of axial clearance is essential for the engine's functionality and lifespan. By following these steps, you can ensure proper adjustment and avoid engine damage caused by excessive axial clearance. Regularly inspecting the camshaft and other engine components will help maintain the engine's performance and prevent costly repairs.
